A Young Entrepreneur on Tackling Resolutions

Get motivated

If you’re looking for motivation to tackle new year’s resolutions as the year comes to an end, you’ve come to the right place! The journey of Safiya Walls, star student and teen entrepreneur, is sure to inspire you in all the best ways!

Whether it’s the National Honors and Technical Honors Societies, the INDLS student council, or many other extracurricular activities, Safiya is always present. She may keep busy paving the way in INDLS clubs (art, world language, writing, and SkillUSA to name a few), but that doesn’t stop her from her other accomplishments like taking college courses and operating her own business. Her active participation exemplifies the ideal star student and businesswoman.

Safiya Walls is a senior at Indiana Digital Learning School, a public virtual high school in Indiana. She joined INDLS in 2018 to manage her weakened immune system and the need for a home-based schooling option. In addition to frequent illnesses, she faced other negative experiences, such as racism at her previous school, which influenced her decision to transition to online education.

What I appreciate most about INDLS is that I can do my classes anywhere-yes, anywhere. I could be in my kitchen, on my couch, or on the moon and still get the education I deserve.” Safiya shared.

Early Inspiration and Motivation

When questioned about her motivation for starting her own business, Safiya explained that she initiated a crochet hat campaign to offer warmth to the homeless in her community. Thus, Viola Panther was born. Her business then expanded to encompass other creative ventures aimed at spreading positivity in various forms.

“At its core, we craft pieces that feel personal and extraordinary, whether that’s stunning canvas art, unique apparel, or our signature crochet cow blankets that are bursting with character.” The entrepreneur explained.

It’s no secret that success is important to Safiya. In speaking with her it was abundantly clear that her motivation to work so hard stems mainly from these three sources:

  1. Personal success: A desire for personal success in and after high school
  2. Giving back: Helping others through her business and through her future profession
  3. Family: Her love for and support from her family

Whether her intention or not, Safiya has become an inspiring leader to her peers and to anyone who knows her.

The Role of Virtual Public School

What would you say to someone who has doubts about success for students attending a virtual public high school?

When asked this question, the young leader was quick to tell us that she always saw INDLS as a real school choice and not as a “homeschool” or easier option. “It was just a smarter way to do things.” She explained. She also went on to say that she will miss her teachers greatly when she graduates this year, “They actually cared about me, which was a nice change [from my former school],” she said.

Advice for the new year

The new year is a perfect time to tackle the goals you’ve been pushing off. If Safiya’s journey and accomplishments haven’t inspired you enough, she shared some advice for others working up the courage to do something great.

“Life’s tough. Change is uncomfortable. But sitting there, letting fear control you? That’s worse. You’re not going to achieve anything by overthinking it. Big goals are supposed to feel overwhelming—that’s the whole point. But if you don’t start, you’re never going to get anywhere. Break it down, focus on the next step, and handle your business,” she advises.

The entrepreneur also reminds others interested in starting their own business venture to remember that it isn’t easy and that it is okay to start small and work from there. She hopes others will work hard at their passions to get the outcome they are hoping for. “Make people notice you,” she encourages.

Whether starting a business, joining a club, taking a college course, whatever it is you fear taking a leap toward Safiya reminds you to start by showing up. “That’s half the battle! Be the energy you wish everyone else had.”

Lastly, regarding those considering a switch to online learning Safiya gave great insight and reminds parents and students that online learning is just school; it just looks a little different. If you think it may be a good option for you, give it a try! All the same opportunities and more exist at INDLS as any other school, so “Appreciate the opportunity!”

The superstar student reminds all to go into the new year ready to tackle something you have feared trying.
