In Their Own Words: INDLS Esports Teams Reflect on Big State Wins
At Indiana Digital Learning School (INDLS), we recognize that student success takes many forms, and this season, our talented esports teams demonstrated the power of virtual learning and teamwork on the statewide stage.
At the recent Indiana esports state finals, INDLS’s middle school Rocket League team earned state runner-up honors, wowing the crowd with their strategic skills and effective team communication. Our high school Minecraft team also brought home runner-up honors, proving that creativity and collaboration are alive and well in competitive gaming. And let’s not forget our high school Fortnite team, which earned an impressive fourth-place finish in a challenging field of players from across the state.
These achievements are more than just trophies; they are a testament to dedication and perseverance. They reflect the power of online education to create genuine opportunities for students to engage, compete, and thrive—both on and off the screen.
“It felt so good to make it to finals,” said Hunter W., a middle school Rocket League player. “Five years ago, I was just playing for fun, and then I made it my goal to make it to the finals. It was one of the best achievements in my Rocket League career.”
“I love that I can play with my teammates, even if I’m not there in person with them,” said Israel C. “Making it to the finals and playing in front of a crowd was an awesome experience.”
At INDLS, virtual learning means more than academics—it’s about connection, creativity, and pursuing passions. Students like Levi N. from the Minecraft team say it best:
“Good communication is the key to good teamwork,” said Levi. “Having the ability to express myself is what makes esports so phenomenal. It allows me to meet people with similar interests and build friendships. Earning rewards and gaining friendships make the constant training and competitive nature of it so worth it.”
Why Esports Matters in Online School
This is more than just gaming. For many INDLS students, it’s a path to personal growth, confidence, and stronger communication skills.
“I joined because I hate playing alone,” said Bryce J. “It’s the people and the socializing I came for. The game was something to bond over.”
“Esports helps me do better in life,” said Levi. “It develops communication and teamwork—skills that are crucial to being a productive member of society.”
“The excitement of the game and communicating with teammates—even when we’re not in the same room—is what I’m passionate about,” added Brock R.
