Jail certification – Explore how INDLS’s program prepares online students for career-ready jobs in public safety

At Indiana Digital Learning School (INDLS), preparing students for real-world success is a cornerstone of the school’s mission. Through a unique blend of online learning and hands-on career training, INDLS is helping students become career-ready before they graduate. One standout example is the Jail Certification Program, a powerful initiative addressing workforce gaps while preparing students for high-demand, high-impact roles.

Launched in the 2022–2023 school year, the program has already served 25 students and continues to grow. By offering the Tier III Basic Jail Officer Certification in partnership with the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA), INDLS gives students a direct pathway into public safety careers while they complete their high school diploma.

Bridging the Gap Between Online School and the Workforce

Career readiness is more important than ever, especially as law enforcement agencies across Indiana face staffing shortages. Departments like IMPD (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) have reported ongoing challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified correctional officers—a need this program is helping to fill.

“Our goal is to make sure students are eligible to be hired the day they graduate,” said the INDLS program leader, Steve Sayers. “We’re combining the flexibility of online learning with certification opportunities that translate directly into good-paying jobs.”

Through INDLS’s online curriculum, students gain early exposure to public safety, allowing them to explore whether a career in corrections or law enforcement is right for them. By completing coursework remotely and participating in hands-on experiences at local facilities, students build foundational skills and gain insight into a career path that offers stability, purpose, and long-term growth. This real-world exposure helps students make informed choices about their future before graduation.

A Launchpad to Purposeful Careers

This program is part of INDLS’s broader effort to deliver career readiness programs that give students more than just a diploma—they leave with skills, certifications, and a clear path to success.

Gina Oakley, school counselor and a leader on the Career Programs Team, sees firsthand how impactful these experiences are for students. “Online school gives students the flexibility to pursue real-world opportunities while they learn,” she said. “The Jail Certification Program adds structure, direction, and purpose—especially for students ready to start building a life for themselves after graduation.”

With steady demand for correctional officers across the state, the program benefits students and supports public safety systems that depend on a skilled, reliable workforce.

Focused and Future-Ready

For students looking to make a difference and gain financial independence, this certification program offers more than a credential—it offers a future.

“We’re not just giving students a class—we’re giving them a career pathway,” said Sayers. “That’s what true career readiness looks like in an online school setting.”

Where Career Readiness Meets Real-World Opportunity

At Indiana Digital Learning School, students earn a diploma and gain the tools, experiences, and credentials to thrive after graduation. Whether pursuing a career in public safety, healthcare, technology, or the trades, INDLS empowers students to explore their passions and build a future through career-focused learning. If you’re looking for an online school prioritizing career readiness and real-world opportunities, now is the time to explore enrollment and discover what’s possible with INDLS.
