A Story of Friendship: INDLS Student Writer Spotlight
At Indiana Digital Learning School (INDLS), we are always eager to celebrate the success of our students! Faith, a freshman at INDLS, is one of four students at our school who earned recognition in K12’s Writing Competition, a national contest open to all K12-powered school students.
Out of 2,000 entries across all grade levels in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction categories, Faith received first place in nonfiction among all freshmen students.
“Since starting at INDLS, my teachers have encouraged me to explore writing in a creative way, which helped me realize my passion for it,” she said.
With dreams of becoming an author, Faith has already begun taking dual credit prerequisites and plans to enroll in creative writing and poetry courses before she even graduates high school.
The friendships Faith has made through INDLS have also fueled her passion for writing. In addition to her friends helping her break out of her shell and gain confidence in her writing, her best friend, Brooklynn, was the inspiration behind her winning story: 5 Years and Counting.
“I wanted to write about the most influential moment of my life, which was meeting Brooklynn five years ago,” Faith said. “She didn’t know I was writing this story until I had finished it and read it to her. She was moved to tears.”
Faith and Brooklynn met in fifth grade through INDLS and have been close ever since. Although they live on opposite ends of the state and haven’t yet met in person, they talk every day and have plans to meet in person for the first time within the next year.
The relationships formed through INDLS have impactedFaith’s entire family. Raising 12 children, Faith’s parents taught her and her siblings to take responsibility for their academic success from a young age to prepare for college and beyond.
“INDLS has been a huge part of preparing Faith and her siblings to become successful, independent adults,” Faith’s mom, Alesha, shared. “My kids have thrived in online learning environments for the past 12 years.”
Alesha found the flexibility and learning experience at INDLS was the ideal fit for her family’s needs and each of her children’s unique learning styles. Alesha wanted to surround her children in a faith-based environment at home during the school day while also ensuring they have access to a cutting-edge curriculum, dual credit courses, and career-readiness opportunities. Four of Faith’s siblings have already graduated from K12-powered schools, and one of her younger siblings will be starting first grade at INDLS next year.
