Stories & Spotlights

Maycie Smeltz, a school counselor at Indiana Digital Learning School (INDLS), comes to work each day ready to attack whatever comes her way in order to get her students the resources they need to succeed. In her three years of being a counselor at INDLS, Maycie has helped her students reach their goals inside and outside of the classroom.

An Indiana native, Maycie’s career began when she was a student at Butler University. She wasn’t sure of career path, but knew she had a passion for making people feel seen and heard. She discovered Butler’s Masters in School Counseling Program, and enrolled immediately following graduation. Part of her program was completing supervision hours in a classroom setting, where she was introduced to virtual schooling. These connections and appreciation for the flexible schedule are what eventually led her to finding her role at INDLS.

“Because of INDLS’s flexibility and being able to teach from home, I was able to make my career aspirations fit with my love for spending time with my family.”

At INDLS, Maycie wears many hats. With each day being different from the last, she spends time connecting one-on-one with students, guiding new families through the enrollment process, overseeing the 21st Century Scholars program, leading state reporting initiatives, holding monthly social emotional learning lessons, and more. Referring to herself as a “concierge”, Maycie’s goal every day is to help connect students to the resources they need to be most successful at INDLS.

“A lesson I try to teach my students is that you don’t have to know exactly where your path will take you, you can explore your options and find your passion.”

Counselors like Maycie embody INDLS’s mission of meeting students where they are and addressing each unique need. Are you looking for an educational environment where your student will feel seen and supported? Enroll at INDLS today!
